The Exception to The Rule

I just got finished reading this, and it made me think about how often people believe that they can do stuff, that’s been proven to have a particular result, the vast majority of the time, and somehow escape the rule, and be the exception.

We see it all the time. There’s the person, who thinks they can just try cocaine, and not get addicted. There’s the gambler, who refuses to believe that casinos are designed to take in money, not give out money. It’s the “other woman”, who believes that her relationship will defy the odds, and she and her cheatin’ paramour will live happily evah aftah. It’s the Christian, who believes they can live on both sides of the spiritual fence, yet stay focused on the things of God. The examples are endless.

Why do we think that if a + b= c, 90% of the time, we will somehow escape the norm, and fall into that 10 percent? Oh, and be careful about seeking advice, in message board forums. Somebody posted a question, in one forum, asking if they should get involved with a man, who was in the process of getting a divorce, but not totally free. Now, to me, there’s only “married” and “divorced”. That’s it. Either you’re married, or you’re divorced. If you’re not divorced then…you’re married.

Simple, right? Wrong. We live in a world that has no clear cut boundaries anymore. It’s all a matter of what a person feels like doing. So, when this question was put out there, in came a bunch of answers — some good (common sense), and some from folks who live by the exception, rather than the rule. These are the folks who will bring up examples like, “My cousin Wanda met this man, who wasn’t divorced when she met him, but they gave it a go anyhow, and now they happily married, got five real smart kids, and live in a $400,000 house in…”. So, they conclude that you should give it a go, “cuz you nevah know”.

Hmmm…well I got multiple stories of family members/acquaintances, who “gave it a go”, and got burned — dudes ended up reconciling with the wives (all the while painting a completely different picture to their partners in adultery), and left devastation along the way. But, these women thought things would turn out different for them, knowing clearly that the odds were not in their favor.

Hey, I don’t claim to be the “brightest crayon in the box”. But hopefully, I won’t deceive myself into thinking that I’m so…special, that I can live my life by the exception, rather than the rule. I try to look at how things work in the world. God has designed certain spiritual “laws”, that are just as real, as the law of gravity. There are certain “rules” in life, that are going to apply in the majority of situations, regardless of how things may appear in natural light.

You preach it, sister! It is amazing to me how the thought process of so many young women seem to come to a complete “dumb” halt and the bad choices seem to be the exciting choice when it really is a dragon and will rise up and bite later.

    Gina,

It’s mind-boggling! The counsel that folks receive is just…bad. Wisdom is truly “crying out” in the streets. I used to wonder why wisdom would have to “cry out”. But lately, I’m beginning to understand.

There used to be an abundance of wise folk, but the crowd has definately…thinned.
It’s like when we make a bad decision, and God allows us (in His mercy) to escape the full consequences of our foolishness, we often don’t get that what we did was not the best way, and that God’s show of mercy was not His stamp of approval of our actions.
