God’s word, that is. We (some of us) spend a lot of time debating it — and I wonder for what reason, exactly.
Do we really wanna know God? Do we really wanna know what God wants us to do? If we knew what He wanted us to do, would we do it? Or, would we try to convince God that He really doesn’t want what He wants?
I think many of us (especially those of us who are somewhat educated and well-read) approach God, and His word, totally wrong. We come to God, with our opinions about how things should be already firmly in place — and then we try to back up what we believe, with the scriptures. Is it just me, or is something kinda wrong about that?
Now, I understand the underlying motivation for the whole “work my beliefs into the scriptures” way of thinking. If I can somehow fit my beliefs into the bible, some kinda way, then that means I won’t have to change the way I think — which is in direct opposition to the idea that our minds are to be transformed, and we are to be conformed to the image of Christ — Romans 12:2.
A humble spirit says, “God, I don’t know how to live. Teach me Your ways. Tell me what to do, and I will do it”. That’s the only way to approach God.
The Psalmist said:
“Teach me, O Lord, how to live by your laws, and I will obey them, till the end.
Help me understand so that I can follow your teachings. I will guard them with all my heart”. Psalm 119:33,34 (GWTTN)
