I did my own two-strand twists a couple of days ago, and they came out pretty good — considering I was half sleep when I did them. They’re really short and cute (I like working with damp hair, but the shrinkage is…amazing), and very cool and lightweight. It’s been hotter than a six-shooter, in Detroit, so I don’t want big hair.
The only product I used was Taliah Waajid’s “Lock it Up” (I dug deep in my big ole box of products, and pulled it out).
Let’s see how much wear I can get!
A Nappy Girl

I started twisting my hair up in May 2006, my hair was at the length of my ears, it is now on my neckline. I wash my hair every two weeks, deep condition and clip about 1/4 inch of hair off to keep it in tip-top condition every other month.
I ‘ve been wearing my hair in its’ natural state and in braids with extensions for about a year and half now . I will never go back to relaxing my hair again. I have priot to this experience wore my hair in a relaxed state for over 30 years and it fell out real bad about 3 yrs. ago, I tried to save it but to no avail.. I was faced with the fact that I would simply have to cut it off and start over.
I wore my hair so long in a relaxed stated that I forgot what the natural texture of my hair was like. My hair is so beautiful and thick plus as an added bonus it is wavy. If I want to wear it straight i can simply blow dry it and use a ( Ceramic ) flat iron, I can wash and wear it with or without products applied to it or I can two-strand twist it , which I must say -” It looks very good on me “

Sunni,
Two-strand twists are all that. But they take all that time to do. That’s why I’m about to breakdown and go to a loctician and have mine done. I love the look, but it just takes too long.
I don’t know why braid-outs are quicker for me to do, but they are. So, I’ll do those myself. But, when I feel a yearnin’ for the twists, I’m headin’ over to The Spiral Collective, and let “Nefertiti” do her thang.
Amen…
Thanks for stoppin’ by :)

Just fell upon your blog as I was searching for hair care info. I live in the Detroit area too:) I absolutely love two strands. They are the best way to grow your hair. In two years time, I grew my twists almost to mid back..and I ain’t got no biracial/wavy/thin curly hair either:) I grew to love my hair and all its nappiness. It can be tedious doing them, but it is well worth it. Some tips to keep them lookin’ good and prevent you from having to constantly redo them:
-Retwist the ones that get too fuzzy.
-Wet them daily followed by a moisturizer (makes em’ look curly on the ends)
-My method: Don’t untwist all of them to freshly redo them. I wash & condition my hair with them still in there, then retwist and oil each one individually, then retwist. This cuts the time in half for me, and prevents me from having to constantly repart.

Hi Ya’ll,
This November will be 2 years nappy for me!
I usually wear my hair in afro. Occasionally I wear TST, but I just dont like the way my hair looks in them! My hair is sooo decieving. When I wear a Afro it looks soooo thick and lush (which it is) but for some reason when I do my twist it looks thin and whispy. I cant get that real full look I’m after in TST. Does anyone know why? I only twist with my own mixture of water, glycerin and Panthenol. I DONT NOT use oil on my hair. It dries it out and makes it seem crunchy for some reason! My hair respondes well to just water and glycerin.
I am very happy with my growth but frankly I think my hair should be longer than it is. I eat right and take vitamins and use only herbs. I make my own herbal spritz hair tea with rosemary, oatstraw and horsetail.
My hair is just weird. How can I get that full thick TST look? Someone told me that even though my hair is thick, it is in somewhat “finer” grade and that’s why it does not look so full. Dont know if that is true or not. PLease help!
Also, how long has anyone wore their TST before they noticed growth? I try to keep my in for a month at time to retain growth but after a week, they start to really thin out (stretch out) and unravel. Any sugestions sisters?????

Elysha,
Hair texture does have an effect. My hair is like yours. It’s definately deceiving. People think it’s thinner than what it is, but it’s actually somewhat fine — but there’s a whole LOT of it. People are always shocked when they see it blown out (when I trim or get a sew-in weave).
Also, when your hair is different lengths (for example, shorter on top and the sides) it won’t look as lush as hair that’s closer to one length — or the top and the sides are long, with a shorter back. As your hair grows, it will begin to look fuller. Hair that has a tighter napp pattern produces thick, fat, bush twists. That’s just the way it is.
Also, my hair is thicker at the crown, than it is in the back. So, once my crown hair grows out longer, it will automatically look thicker, because the more dense hair will cover the not-as-thick hair at the back.
Learn to love the hair you have. Even with a finer texture, if your hair is not truly thin, you will get a lush look as your hair grows out.
You know that saying that a “watched pot never boils”? Well, watched hair never grows. Nappy hair doesn’t show growth, like straight hair.

I’ve been wearing my hair natural for almost 8 years. I cut it all off in college and started from scratch. I always knew my hair was thick, but DANG!!!… I have come to find out that I have what my boyfreind likes to call “Black Power hair”. I absolutely love my hair and one of my fav styles in two strand twists. I’ve been twisting for 6 or 7 years and I’ll tell you that you get a lot quicker at it. What once took my 12 hours to do (sometimes I twist them really really small) now takes about 6-7 hours. With this size of course, I can leave them in for up to 3 months. I wash my hair with the twists in braiding the twists into plats (this helps minimize fuzziness). Every couple of weeks or so I might take down the front and redo them. They are very versitile and very beautiful on Black women.
For the Sista that was having the problem of your twists not looking full, try twisting dry instead of wet. You can actually blowdry your hair first or let in dry naturally in plats. If you find that they lack the bouncyness you like or look stiff, try roller setting them on large or small rollers. The rollers will give them bouncyness and fullness. I do a lot with roller sets with my twist, especially when they start to get old, it kinda hides that fact. And like I said, I keep mine in for months and just redo the front. The smaller they are the less you will notice fuzz or even some unraveling.

Two questions:
First, is there a way to keep the root of a two-strand twist maintained? I agree with some of the other bloggers, the time it takes to reduce this wonderful style is extremely time consuming.
Second, are there any groups in Detroit, where individuals could get together to redo each others’ hair rather than paying $150 to $225 at the salons?
thanks from T

I don’t “maintain” the roots of my twists. It all depends on the texture of your hair, and what “look” you’re trying to achieve. If you’re trying to prevent the roots from getting puffy, you might wanna braid down a few stitches, and then twist. I don’t like that, though. Two-strand twists are low-maintenance (once you get them in), which is why I really like them.
I don’t know of any groups in Detroit, that do hair maintenance. That’s gonna be difficult to find. First off, most people I know (me included) aren’t comfortable going to strangers, or allowing strangers in their homes — unless the person does hair for a living/side gig and has references.
Also, I barely have time to do/maintain my own hair.

I usually wear my hair blown out but I’m thinking of twisting it on my own. Any ideas on what to use to do it? My hair gets really curly and short when wet so I prefer to do it after i blow dry it.

I just luv 7 years of freedom. I have done the 2.S.T. for over 7 years now. It takes me about 4 hours to do my own but I prefer to go to http://www.braidsunlimited.com (DC location) and get them done for less than the price of a perm in only 30-35 minutes! Kudos to Christine! I use http://www.carolsdaughter.com products, too. I use the Daily Leave-in conditioner and hairmilk along with some of her other products.
