I just luv 7 years of freedom. I have done the 2.S.T. for over 7 years now. It takes me about 4 hours to do my own but I prefer to go to www.braidsunlimited.com (DC location) and get them done for less than the price of a perm in only 30-35 minutes! Kudos to Christine! I use www.carolsdaughter.com products, too. I use the Daily Leave-in conditioner and hairmilk along with some of her other products.

I usually wear my hair blown out but I'm thinking of twisting it on my own. Any ideas on what to use to do it? My hair gets really curly and short when wet so I prefer to do it after i blow dry it.

I don't "maintain" the roots of my twists. It all depends on the texture of your hair, and what "look" you're trying to achieve. If you're trying to prevent the roots from getting puffy, you might wanna braid down a few stitches, and then twist. I don't like that, though. Two-strand twists are low-maintenance (once you get them in), which is why I really like them.

I don't know of any groups in Detroit, that do hair maintenance. That's gonna be difficult to find. First off, most people I know (me included) aren't comfortable going to strangers, or allowing strangers in their homes — unless the person does hair for a living/side gig and has references.

Also, I barely have time to do/maintain my own hair. :dunno

Two questions:

First, is there a way to keep the root of a two-strand twist maintained? I agree with some of the other bloggers, the time it takes to reduce this wonderful style is extremely time consuming.

Second, are there any groups in Detroit, where individuals could get together to redo each others' hair rather than paying $150 to $225 at the salons?

thanks from T

I've been wearing my hair natural for almost 8 years. I cut it all off in college and started from scratch. I always knew my hair was thick, but DANG!!!... I have come to find out that I have what my boyfreind likes to call "Black Power hair". I absolutely love my hair and one of my fav styles in two strand twists. I've been twisting for 6 or 7 years and I'll tell you that you get a lot quicker at it. What once took my 12 hours to do (sometimes I twist them really really small) now takes about 6-7 hours. With this size of course, I can leave them in for up to 3 months. I wash my hair with the twists in braiding the twists into plats (this helps minimize fuzziness). Every couple of weeks or so I might take down the front and redo them. They are very versitile and very beautiful on Black women.

For the Sista that was having the problem of your twists not looking full, try twisting dry instead of wet. You can actually blowdry your hair first or let in dry naturally in plats. If you find that they lack the bouncyness you like or look stiff, try roller setting them on large or small rollers. The rollers will give them bouncyness and fullness. I do a lot with roller sets with my twist, especially when they start to get old, it kinda hides that fact. And like I said, I keep mine in for months and just redo the front. The smaller they are the less you will notice fuzz or even some unraveling.
