Someone posted a thread at a napptural hair forum, asking if the women who frequent that particular forum are a little too zealous and opinionated when it comes to black women choosing napps over straight. The thread disappeared, as I knew (and the person who started it should have known as well) it would. But, since this is my space, I can say what I want. Glory! Cuz I’m about to get ticked off, so I’m gonna say my peace.
First off: NOBODY likes to be ridiculed, regardless of how ridiculous their actions are or seem to be to others. Secondly, NEVER pretend to be a friend, when in fact, you’re a foe. Meaning, don’t go to a forum frequented by permies/weave-wearers, and come off as if you’re just gathering information cuz “you just wanna know” something, and then go back to your camp, and put those same women on blast. Folks aren’t as stupid as you think they are. Relaxers don’t melt the brain. Plus, many black haircare forums share the same members, so you will eventually be found out. Show the same face, regardless of the place.
Come clean about what you’re really about. If you’re genuinely concerned about the negative reinforcement black women receive regarding their natural hair, then be about educating and helping those women feel good about themselves. If you want to be a part of an elitist, militant, “Borg-like” group, that likes to think they’re so enlightened, while the rest of black folk are just so…clueless, then admit it and stop being fake. You know, you can be “fake” with napps, too.
Don’t trade one set of shackles for another. Many of us want to “belong”, because we’ve felt for so long like we didn’t belong. We like being with folks who think like us, and who can appreciate what others have not appreciated. But check yourself. Cuz you can end up being just like the folks you hold in contempt. Your nastiness hurts the cause.
