Texture Hangups

Yes, black women have issues with hair texture. Yes, there are “degrees” of napps, and where you are on the nappy scale can cause problems — internally, and with those who are supposed to be on your side.

Hey, I’ve never been for trying to hide stuff, cuz it eventually comes out. Truth sets you free, but only if you acknowledge the truth. Don’t get mad. Examine yourself, and see what’s wrong, and then make an effort to change the way you think, so the truth will do you good.

Nappturals can be hateful sometimes, when it comes to excluding those whose napps aren’t “as nappy” as they need to be, to be accepted into the nappy society. We have a need to alienate others, in order to feel better about being alienated, ourselves. So we tell those, who are more 3c, than 4b, to stop trying to share the stage. The only true napps, are the tightest, kinkiest ones. The rest are misrepresenting, and we don’t like it, darn it!

Then, there are those of us who don’t mind napps, per se, but we really long for/like Tracee Ellis Ross/Kelis type hair. We ain’t really feelin’ India Arie napps. We wanna like nappy hair, really we do. Cuz deep down, we know that there’s something not quite right about allowing someone to put creamed Draino on our hair and scalps. But…we’ve watched too many videos, spent too much time in the “Outre” beauty supply store aisle, and seen too many brothas with white/asian/latino women. We’re scared that black men will shun us even more, and we’ll continue to spend our Saturday nites, with Netflix and Pop Secret. Only those with “good hair” can/should wear it natural. The cost for the rest of us, is too…costly.

There. I’ve said it. If it doesn’t apply to you, then praise God! You’ve managed to escape the madness. If it does apply to you, my heart goes out to you and my prayer is that you break free — not to be shackled by a new set of chains, but to be free, indeed.

 Happily I can finally accept my own napps.. But this hasn’t always been so. I’m just glad I can finally lay the “How can I get my hair……. Different” phase..

Yeah. I’m just too old to keep tryna fight it. My hair is what it is. I just wish folks would be honest and not AFRAID to dialogue about it. Whenever it gets too “real”, the skin starts to thin, and we get nowhere.

    Peace and Hair Grease!

…this made me think about being a kid and teasing each other with the song from Stay Soft Fro….”if yo hair is short and nappy…stay soft fro can make it happy” been nappy myself for the past two years…and to be honest it was a lot easier getting it done when it was “fried…and laid to the side!” LOL
